I agree with BradyBunch about the TCD ... probably a more kid friendly place to fish unless they're older ones. If you fish on the refinery side, you are more likely to have problems with tackle losses, but you also get better access to deeper water without going all the way out near the end. Just about anywhere along the dike, on either side ... you ought to be able to find some fish of some sort for kids to catch ... and you may want to consider using squid instead of shrimp ... it stays on the hook a little bit better, so is easier for beginners to catch fish on a lot of times. If you stop somewhere and aren't catching any fish within 20 minutes or so (or at least losing bait!) ... move to another spot ... there always seem to be some sand trout, croakers, or something for youngsters to catch along there somewhere. You have to watch for ships on either side ... but especially if you set up on the refinery side and not well out the dike ... when a loaded ship moves up the ship channel, or the smaller channel to the refineries ... they can generate a pretty sizeable wave, which will suck water out hard just before it gets there, then swamp the place. On the refinery side, it often catches people who aren't used to it unaware, and in places the wave sometimes breaks right up over the rocks ... I've seen little kids get washed in by it.

: i want to take my kids fishing on put them on some fish but was wondering if i should take them to the surf or to the tcd to improve the chances of them catching something. i'm fairly new to this and dont realy know the fishing patterns this time of year. thanks
