As with anything else, opinions on etiquette vary widely. Personally, I try to stay at least 150 yards away from other boats drifting, and 300 or more under power (of course, there are times/locations that isn't possible). I figure if I don't have the sense to find some fish on my own, I'm not going to horn in on someone else and risk putting down a bite that they've located for themselves. Lots of things to consider into it ... how much chop is on the water, how noisy is the hull slap on your particular boat, trolling motor or no, other boats anchored up or drifting, how shallow (shallower it is, wider berth I give), etc.
