We instituted the password to help stop (and it worked) the "Find your Russian Bride", porno, etc. links that were being posted ... and yes ... they were a pain ... sometimes 6 or 8 times a day. You know very well that your wife is welcome to post, and for you to give her the info to do so.
The script we use for the forum is not a very versatile or robust one ... but it IS free with the web space. If we can find good coorporate sponsorship for the site so I know there is solid, consistent income, I have been looking into buying a script that would allow the things you talk about (users able to do their own profiles, individual passwords, etc.). After having dealt with the mess that it can turn into with NO password tho, I don't think I ever want to allow posts without it again. I can't monitor the site 24/7, and I sure don't want someone's kids getting on here and finding a link to a porn site. I really don't see how not allowing visitors to post should effect the group ... if they want to post it is very easy (and free) to join. I think that allowing totally anonymous posts just facilitates those who cause the types of problems I've seen and heard about on other boards, and we don't want that started here.
