Leaping Sting Rays - Anyone else see them ?

At access road 6 surf 11/12SEP04, I noticed at least a half dozen times when a small (18-24" across) ray would launch themself out of the water, perhaps 2-3 feet. Twice I saw them launch out of a wave crest (to mazimize their launch ?).

Is this some sort of mating thing or are they evading a confrontation of another sort ?

Ideas ?
